Moody Air Force Base Georgia held a memorial service on October 19.

Chavis, 21, was killed Saturday near Baghdad while manning a .50-caliber machine gun turret on top of a Humvee. He was deployed with the 732nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at Sather Air Base, Iraq. Previously, he was assigned to the 824th Security Forces Squadron at Moody Air Force Base, Ga.

According to preliminary information that Eagle Chapter has acquired, Airman Chavis was killed while part of a team that had responded to aid Iraqi police forces who were disarming an improvised explosive device. Airman Chavis sacrificed his life while temporarily exposing himself to prevent Iraqi women and children from entering the affected area.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Airman Chavis’ death,” said Col. John Decknick, 820th Security Forces Group commander. “He was an extremely valuable member of our team and Moody community, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

This was Chavis’ second tour in Iraq. He arrived in country July 21.  Airman Chavis' dad says that Leebernard died doing what he loved to do.  He also asks that we continue to take the battle forward so that his son does not die in vain.
